(Newshub desk)Residents of Delhi-NCR were jolted early Thursday morning as a 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck the Jhajjar district in Haryana at 9:04 AM, triggering widespread tremors across North India.
The quake, which originated at a depth of 10 km, was felt across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Rohtak, Bahadurgarh, Dadri, and extended to parts of western Uttar Pradesh, including Meerut and Shamli.
Eyewitness accounts described the tremors as some of the longest in recent memory, with ceiling fans and fixtures swaying noticeably
In response, office-goers and residents evacuated buildings and took shelter in open spaces.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) issued safety advisories urging citizens to stay calm, avoid elevators, and step out using staircases.
Drivers were instructed to safely pull over to open areas.
Experts warn that Delhi lies in Seismic Zone IV, a high-risk region positioned near several active fault lines such as the Delhi-Haridwar Ridge, Sohna Fault, Delhi-Moradabad Fault, and Mahendragarh-Dehradun Fault.
These geophysical structures make the area particularly vulnerable to seismic activity due to tectonic stress from the Indian-Eurasian plate collision.
Authorities confirmed there were no reports of damage or casualties, but emphasised continued vigilance and preparedness as aftershocks remain a possibility.
