Bhubaneswar, Odisha’s vibrant capital, marked its 77th Foundation Day on April 13, 2025, with a spectacular two-day celebration that paid homage to the city’s rich heritage, planned urban legacy, and dynamic evolution into a modern metropolitan hub.
The festivities showcased Bhubaneswar’s unique blend of ancient history and contemporary aspirations, drawing residents, dignitaries, and visitors into a shared celebration of civic pride.
The event kicked off on the morning of April 13 with a solemn ceremony at the foundation stone plaque near the Odisha Legislative Assembly, where floral tributes were offered to honor the city’s historic inception in 1948. Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy hoisted the ceremonial flag, symbolizing unity and progress.
The highlight of the day was a vibrant parade that wound its way from Rabindra Mandap Square to Soochana Bhawan, featuring college student contingents, cultural troupes, and bands. Due to prevailing heatwave conditions, the state government ensured the parade was limited to college students, prioritizing participant safety while maintaining the event’s grandeur.
A curated photo exhibition at Soochana Bhawan will be inaugurated, offering a visual journey through Bhubaneswar’s transformation from a planned city designed by German architect Otto Königsberger to a bustling urban center now home to over 1.4 million people. The exhibition highlights iconic landmarks, such as the Lingaraj Temple and the modern IT hubs, underscoring the city’s ability to balance heritage with innovation.
The evening will come alive with cultural programs at Utkal Mandap, where traditional Odia dance forms like Odissi and folk performances will enthrall audiences. Local artists and musicians will showcase the state’s cultural richness, while winners of pre-event competitions in art, essay writing, and quizzes will be felicitated, encouraging youth participation in civic celebrations.
On April 14, the festivities will continue in collaboration with the “Odia Pakhya” initiative by the Odia Language, Literature, and Culture Department. The day focuses on promoting Odia identity, art, and language, reinforcing Bhubaneswar’s role as the cultural soul of Odisha. Government and private buildings across the city would be illuminated, and statues of prominent figures will be garlanded, symbolizing gratitude for their contributions to the state’s progress.
Reflecting on the city’s history, Bhubaneswar’s foundation stone was laid by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, on April 13, 1948, marking its transition from Cuttack as Odisha’s capital. Designed for a population of 40,000, the city has grown exponentially, earning accolades as one of India’s first planned cities and a leader in urban development. Its 3,000-year-old history, tracing back to the Mahamegha-Bahana Chedi dynasty with Sisupalgarh as its capital, adds depth to its modern narrative.
