( Newshub Desk)In a transformative step towards multilingual education, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued new guidelines urging affiliated schools to map students’ mother tongues.
This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aims to enhance foundational learning by integrating familiar languages into early education.
Under the new framework, schools are encouraged to use a student’s home language (R1) as the medium of instruction from pre-primary to Class 2. From Classes 3 to 5, institutions can either continue with R1 or introduce a second language (R2), allowing for gradual language diversification.
This approach is backed by research showing that children develop stronger comprehension and cognitive skills when taught in their native tongue.
To ensure a smooth transition, schools will establish committees responsible for identifying teaching resources, adjusting curricula, and overseeing implementation.
Teacher training workshops will also be conducted to support educators in delivering multilingual instruction effectively.
Starting in July, schools must submit monthly progress reports, providing updates on their adoption of mother tongue-based education.
Academic observers may visit institutions to guide and facilitate the shift towards linguistic inclusivity.
This progressive move is expected to enhance conceptual understanding among young learners, fostering a deeper connection between education and culture.
With NEP 2020 setting the stage, CBSE schools are gearing up to embrace a more inclusive, multilingual learning environment.
