Tata Steel Meramandali Advances Sustainable Infrastructure with Industrial Byproducts in Angul Bypass Road Project

Narendrapur, May 19, 2025: As part of its commitment to sustainable infrastructure and resource efficiency through circular economy, Tata Steel Meramandali (TSM) has supplied fly ash and LD slag for the NH-55 (Angul Bypass) project. Fly ash, generated from TSM’s power plant, and LD slag—a byproduct of the basic
oxygen furnace (BOF) from steel manufacturing process—were repurposed to construct the bypass. This collaboration underscores TSM’s focus on innovative waste-to-resource solutions, enhancing road connectivity while reducing reliance on virgin materials. By integrating industrial byproducts into critical infrastructure, the initiative highlights the environmental and economic benefits of closing the loop in material usage. For FY 2023-24 and 2024-25, 10.73 lakh metric tons (LMT) of fly ash has been supplied for the construction NH 55 (Angul Bypass) by TSM. Similarly, a total of 9.56 LMT LD slag has been supplied during this period.
Under strict supervision and guidelines laid by Fly Ash Notification, Central Pollution Control Board, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Odisha State Pollution Control Board this has been implemented. The Angul Bypass road project, facilitated by the NHAI, employs these sustainable materials in conjunction
with other construction resources. This holistic approach to road development not only addresses current infrastructural challenges but also significantly diminishes reliance on natural resources, promoting environmental sustainability and reducing waste generation. Tata Steel’s contributions, while a small part of the overall construction efforts, reflect a commitment to eco￾friendly practices and underscore a significant step towards achieving an efficient circular economy. The Angul Bypass is expected to alleviate congestion in Angul town, enhancing public transport efficiency and overall connectivity in the region.
