(Newshub Desk)In a bid to address the growing human-wildlife conflict in forest-fringe areas, the Odisha government has rolled out a revised compensation policy that promises quicker and fairer relief to affected communities.

As per the new guidelines issued by the Forest and Environment Department, families of individuals killed in wild animal attacks will now receive Rs 10 lakh in compensation.

The policy introduces specific measures for property loss as well:

  • Rs 10,000 for partial damage to homes
  • 3,000 for the destruction of kitchen sheds or cattle enclosures
  • Full reconstruction support under the Antyodaya housing scheme for homes that are completely destroyed
  • Rs 5,000 per metre for damage to pucca compound walls, capped at Rs 25,000

Officials confirmed that the package is being implemented statewide with immediate effect.

The move comes amid a sharp rise in wild animal incursions—particularly elephants and leopards—into human settlements, driven by habitat loss and food scarcity.

“This enhanced package will reduce distress and offer clarity in compensatory mechanisms,” stated a senior official.

The step is seen as a balanced approach to conservation while ensuring community safety and resilience.
