(Newshub Desk)In a proactive response to surging inflows, authorities at Hirakud Dam have opened 16 sluice gates to discharge excess water and avert potential flooding in downstream areas.

The dam, situated on the Mahanadi River, has released 2.68 lakh cusecs of water per second, with 11 gates on the left bank and five on the right bank in operation.

As of Thursday, the reservoir level has reached 605.39 feet, inching closer to its full capacity of 630 feet. Incoming water continues at a rate of 2.41 lakh cusecs per second.

To manage this, 2.31 lakh cusecs are being discharged via the spillway, while 33,570 cusecs are routed through the power channel.

With a total of 98 gates — including 64 sluice and 34 crest gates — Hirakud Dam plays a vital role in both flood control and hydroelectric generation.

The Water Resources Department remains on high alert, monitoring rainfall in the catchment area, which may prompt further gate operations.

Local authorities have issued warnings to residents in low-lying regions, urging caution and preparedness.

Officials reiterated that these actions are precautionary and aimed at managing the monsoon’s impact efficiently.
