New Delhi, July 5, (Newshub Desk) Tensions between India and China have flared once again as Beijing issued a stern warning to New Delhi, urging it to stay out of what it considers an internal matter— the selection of the next Dalai Lama.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning responded sharply to Indian Union Minister Kiren Rijiju’s recent statement that the decision regarding the Dalai Lama’s successor lies solely with authorised religious authorities and the Dalai Lama himself.

Mao asserted that Tibet-related issues fall strictly within China’s domestic affairs and that any external commentary or interference could adversely impact diplomatic ties between the two nations.

China further emphasised that the current Dalai Lama, whom it labels a “separatist,” should not be supported in any capacity that may embolden anti-China sentiments.

The warning is seen as a reflection of Beijing’s growing sensitivity toward Tibetan spiritual and political autonomy discussions.

Adding to the complexity, the Dalai Lama had previously clarified that the Gaden Phodrang Trust—established in 2015—will be responsible for approving his successor to preserve traditional protocols.

As geopolitical friction builds, analysts note that such exchanges could deepen distrust between the Asian giants, especially amid unresolved border disputes and competing regional interests.
