( Newshub Desk) India is making bold strides in its pursuit of becoming a global leader in green hydrogen production. At the World Hydrogen Summit 2025, Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), outlined India’s ambitious vision to drive a clean energy revolution through the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Launched in 2023 with $2.4 billion in funding, the mission aims to:

    • Produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030.
    • Cut 50 million metric tonnes of CO2 emissions every year.
    • Attract $100 billion in investments and generate 600,000+ jobs.

The government has already allocated 862,000 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen production capacity to 19 companies, while 15 firms are set to manufacture 3,000 MW of electrolysers annually.

The initiative spans key sectors such as steel, mobility, and shipping, with pilot projects already underway.

To streamline operations, the administration has introduced groundbreaking policies, including:

    • Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme for standardisation.
    • Exemption from Environmental Clearance for green hydrogen and ammonia plants.
    • Development of three major ports—Kandla, Paradip, and Tuticorin—as hydrogen hubs.
    • Support from 15 states through exclusive policy frameworks.

Despite challenges like high production costs and infrastructure limitations, India remains committed to scaling up production and becoming a leading exporter of green hydrogen by 2030.

The nation has invited global investors to collaborate in accelerating the clean energy transition.

With its visionary approach, India is poised to redefine the future of sustainable energy and play a pivotal role in global decarbonization efforts.
