ODISHA ( Newshub Desk): A massive herd of 67 elephants from neighbouring Jharkhand has entered Odisha again, wreaking havoc on agricultural lands and unsettling local communities.

The elephants crossed the Budhabalanga River and moved through rural areas, trampling acres of crops and forcing villagers into a state of panic.

Farmers in the Betanati range had cultivated rabi paddy with high hopes following increased government-set prices.

However, the arrival of these elephants has led to widespread destruction of farmlands, leaving cultivators in distress. Residents with fragile houses are particularly alarmed, as reports indicate damage to homes near forested regions.

The elephants’ movement through human settlements has escalated the risk of direct encounters, especially for locals collecting forest resources.

Forest department authorities have mobilised teams to monitor the herd and prevent further damage. However, concerns remain over delayed compensation for last year’s elephant-related destruction, adding frustration among farmers.

Experts highlight that human-elephant conflicts are becoming more frequent due to habitat loss and migration patterns. Authorities urge residents to remain cautious while they attempt to redirect the herd away from populated areas.
