Bhubaneswar, April 22, 2025 – In a heartfelt tribute to Pope Francis, the Odisha Government has declared a three-day state mourning following the revered leader’s passing on April 21, 2025. The Government of India has also announced two days of national mourning, with an additional day on the Pope’s funeral.
As per official directives, the national flag will be flown at half-mast, and official entertainment activities will be suspended throughout the mourning period.
Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88 due to a cerebral stroke, was known for his compassion, humility, and efforts toward interfaith unity. His leadership profoundly impacted millions, fostering dialogue between different faiths and advocating for global peace.
Political leaders across the world, including Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik, expressed their condolences, reflecting on the Pope’s enduring legacy.
The late pontiff will be laid to rest on April 26 at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, a site of deep personal significance to him.
