On April 14, 2025, the city of Bhubaneswar came alive with reverence as Odisha’s Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, led a heartfelt tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti. The ceremony, held at AG Chowk, saw the Chief Minister offering floral tributes at the towering statue of the Bharat Ratna recipient, a symbol of equality and social justice in India.

The statue of Dr. Ambedkar, adorned with vibrant marigold garlands—a traditional gesture of respect in Indian culture—was the centerpiece of the event. Surrounded by lush green trees, the statue stood tall as a diverse group of leaders and citizens gathered to honor the architect of the Indian Constitution. The event underscored Ambedkar’s enduring legacy, not only in Odisha but across India and beyond, where his contributions to constitutionalism and social justice continue to inspire millions.

Ambedkar Jayanti, observed annually on April 14, marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, born in 1891. A public holiday in over 25 states and union territories, including Odisha, this day is also celebrated as “Equality Day” in some regions, reflecting Ambedkar’s lifelong fight against caste-based discrimination and his advocacy for marginalized communities. Globally, the United Nations has honored Ambedkar Jayanti in 2016, 2017, and 2018, while British Columbia, Canada, officially recognizes April 14 as “Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Equality Day” since 2021.

Chief Minister Majhi, who hails from the Santal tribe and is the first from his community to hold the position, expressed deep admiration for Ambedkar’s vision. Having assumed office as Odisha’s 15th Chief Minister in June 2024 after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a majority in the state assembly, Majhi’s participation in the event highlighted the intersection of tribal leadership and Ambedkar’s ideals of inclusivity. “Dr. Ambedkar’s work laid the foundation for a just society, and it is our duty to carry forward his mission of equality,” Majhi said during the ceremony.

The event saw a diverse gathering of political leaders, activists, and citizens, reflecting Ambedkar’s universal appeal. The use of marigold garlands, deeply rooted in Indian traditions, symbolized auspiciousness and respect, a practice that dates back to Vedic times and remains integral to ceremonies across the country. As the crowd paid their respects, the atmosphere was one of unity and reflection, a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to social reform.

Dr. Ambedkar, a polymath proficient in 11 languages and a master of 64 subjects, played a pivotal role in shaping modern India. His contributions to the Constitution, particularly the inclusion of provisions for reservations for Scheduled Castes and Tribes, have been instrumental in advancing social justice. As India continues to navigate its journey toward substantive democracy, events like these serve as a reminder of Ambedkar’s vision for an egalitarian society.
