Bhubaneswar, July 9(Newshub Desk): In a major stride towards correctional modernisation, the Odisha government has permanently closed three sub-jails across Nayagarh, Balasore, and Bargarh districts.

A notification issued by the Home Department on July 7 formalised the move, merging these facilities with their respective district jails.

According to the directive:

  • Khandapada Sub-Jail will now operate under Nayagarh District Jail.
  • Nilagiri Sub-Jail merges with Balasore District Jail.
  • Sohela Sub-Jail joins the Bargarh District Jail.

The decision, signed by the Additional Chief Secretary, aims to streamline prison administration, enhance operational efficiency, and align with Odisha’s broader correctional policies.

The Director General of Prisons has been instructed to oversee seamless inmate transfers, staff redeployment, and relocation of infrastructure.

While the sub-jails will no longer function as detention centres, their physical structures will be secured for potential repurposing by district administrations.

The reform initiative is seen as a strategic step toward optimising limited resources and strengthening prison oversight in the state.
