The festival, celebrated on Jyestha Amavasya, is marked by rigorous fasting, prayers, and temple visits to seek blessings for the health and longevity of their husbands.
Women, adorned in vibrant sarees, bangles, and vermilion, can be seen offering prayers to Goddess Sabitri, a divine figure associated with unwavering marital dedication. Temples across the state are bustling with devotees, while many women have invited priests to their homes for ritualistic pujas.
The nirjala vrata—a strict fast without food or water—demonstrates the spiritual discipline and patience of the devotees. This age-old tradition remains an integral part of Odia culture, reinforcing moral values, family bonds, and community spirit.
