Balasore, June 22, (Newshub Desk). More than 50,000 residents across four blocks in Balasore are grappling with severe flooding after the Subarnarekha River surged past its danger level of 10.36 meters.
Triggered by relentless rainfall and water release from Jharkhand, the river has engulfed 61 villages across Baliapal, Basta, Bhograi, and Jaleswar blocks.
Families fled submerged homes, seeking safety on high roads, bus stands, and cyclone shelters. In Jamakunda, residents camped overnight at bus stops to escape both rising waters and venomous snakes.
Rescue operations are in full swing with Odisha Fire Services deploying boats for evacuations.
Free kitchens have been set up in Jaleswar NAC, while dry rations are being distributed in Baliapal—the worst-affected area.
District Collector Suryawanshi Mayur Vikas, who visited the flood zones, assured swift delivery of halogen tablets, ORS, and essential supplies.
“We anticipate some relief as water levels may recede by morning,” he said, while acknowledging difficulties in reaching interior pockets.
Authorities remain on high alert as monsoon challenges mount, underscoring the urgency of proactive flood management across Odisha’s vulnerable regions.
