(Newshub Desk)In a significant political development, Sunita Biswal—daughter of former Odisha Chief Minister Hemant Biswal—has formally joined the Indian National Congress, just hours before Rahul Gandhi’s scheduled visit to the state on July 11.
On Wednesday, Sunita resigned from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), where she had served as a primary member and contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Sundargarh, securing approximately 2.77 lakh votes.
Citing personal reasons, she submitted her resignation letter to party chief Naveen Patnaik.
Although rumours of her party switch had circulated earlier, especially in view of the 2024 general elections, Sunita had publicly denied such speculations.
Her sudden move to embrace the Congress party just a day later marks a noteworthy shift in Odisha’s political landscape.
The timing of her entry suggests strategic realignment ahead of upcoming national polls, with her joining potentially adding electoral weight to Congress’s campaign in the region.
