(Newshub Desk)In a landmark move to address judicial vacancies, the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of 36 individuals to various High Courts across India, marking the largest single set of such recommendations in recent times.
The Collegium, comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices Surya Kant and Vikram Nath, conducted interviews on July 2 and 3, even during the court’s summer recess, now classified as “partial working days.” The candidates selected were lauded for their ethical clarity and judicial acumen, even if some lacked high-profile case experience or top-tier endorsements.
Appointments have been proposed for High Courts in Delhi, Punjab & Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Patna, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gauhati. Among them, Punjab & Haryana and Madhya Pradesh received the highest number—10 each—while Andhra Pradesh had one.
As of July 1, 2025, 371 out of 1,122 sanctioned High Court judge positions remain vacant. The appointments await Central Government approval to be finalized.
This proactive step reflects the judiciary’s commitment to maintaining judicial efficiency and restoring balance in the nation’s higher courts.
