Bhubaneswar, Odisha(Newshub Desk ): In a move to protect both visitors and wildlife, Bhitarkanika National Park will remain closed for tourists from May 1 to July 31, 2025. This closure comes during the crocodile breeding season, a period marked by heightened aggression among the reptiles.

The Forest Department’s decision aims to minimize risks to visitors and safeguard the crocodiles during this critical reproductive phase.

Bhitarkanika, located in Kendrapara district, is a biodiversity hotspot and home to the largest population of saltwater crocodiles in India.

During the breeding season, these crocodiles exhibit defensive behavior as they guard their nests and young ones. Authorities have urged villagers along riverbanks to avoid venturing near water bodies to ensure their safety.

Crocodile mating is followed by nesting and hatching, during which mother crocodiles fiercely protect their offspring. To avoid disturbances and potential crocodile attacks, the park will be temporarily inaccessible. Visitors are advised to plan their trips accordingly once the park reopens.

For wildlife enthusiasts, this temporary closure is a reminder of the delicate balance between tourism and conservation efforts. Bhitarkanika National Park remains a unique eco-tourism destination, and its reopening will allow tourists to witness its natural wonders responsibly.
