Bhubaneswar, Sept 22: A political storm swept through the Odisha Assembly on Monday after Speaker Surama Padhy rejected a no-confidence motion filed by the Opposition Congress against the ruling BJD government. The Speaker cited procedural lapses and expiration of the motion’s deadline—September 19—as the reason for dismissal, attributing delays to repeated disruptions in the House.

Congress MLAs responded with fury, storming the well of the Assembly and shouting slogans before staging a dramatic walkout. The party accused the Speaker of deliberately blocking the motion, calling it a “political conspiracy” orchestrated by the ruling party to avoid scrutiny.

Congress leaders maintained that the motion had been submitted in time and blamed the BJD for engineering chaos to prevent its discussion. The incident has further strained relations between the two parties, with Congress demanding transparency and accountability in legislative proceedings.

The monsoon session has already been marred by frequent adjournments and uproar, stalling progress on key legislative matters. The rejection of the motion has now added fuel to the fire, intensifying calls for reform in Assembly protocols.
