Kaziranga University, Assam — Nagaland Minister Temjen Imna Along has publicly condemned the offensive remarks made by a Naga student about late singer Zubeen Garg, calling the incident “deeply unfortunate” and issuing an apology on behalf of the student community.
The controversy erupted on Saturday night when a B.Tech civil engineering student at Kaziranga University made derogatory comments during a heated exchange with peers.
A video of the incident quickly went viral, sparking outrage across social media platforms.
Speaking to the media, Minister Along emphasised Zubeen Garg’s legacy as a cultural icon of Assam and the Northeast, stating, “Zubeen was not just a singer—he was the pride of our region and the nation.” He assured that over 300 Naga students at the university are safe and urged restraint during this sensitive period of mourning.
Zubeen Garg, 52, tragically passed away in a scuba diving accident in Singapore on Friday. His cremation with full state honours is scheduled for September 23 at Kamarkuchi village near Guwahati.
Minister Along thanked Assam police and university officials for their swift intervention, which helped defuse tensions and prevent further unrest.
