Bhubaneswar: The Birla School of Law, Birla Global University (BGU) hosts a two-day International Conference on “Emerging Issues, Challenges, and Opportunities in Human Rights and Freedom of Expression”, bringing together leading jurists, academicians and thought leaders.
The inaugural session was attended by Justice Dr. Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, Member, National Human Rights Commission and former Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court, as Chief Guest. Shri Asim Amitabh Das, Former Member, Odisha Human Rights Commission, joined as Guest of Honour, while Prof. (Dr.) Rangin Pallab Tripathy, Registrar, National Law University Odisha, delivered the keynote address.
Welcoming the gathering, Prof. (Dr.) S.K. Nanda, Dean, Birla School of Law, highlighted the role of academic discourse in strengthening democratic values. Prof. (Dr.) B.K. Das, Registrar, BGU, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to promoting legal scholarship.
In his address, Prof. Tripathy emphasised the need to balance freedom of expression with accountability in the digital age. Shri Das spoke on evolving human rights challenges driven by social media, artificial intelligence and environmental concerns.
Addressing the gathering, Justice Sarangi stressed that while exercising rights, individuals must ensure they do not infringe upon others’ rights.
(Dr.) Kulbhushan Balooni, Vice Chancellor, BGU, highlighted that the judiciary remains a pillar of hope in safeguarding rights and ensuring a just and equitable society.
The conference has seen participation from researchers, academicians and students from leading institutions across India.
