Bhubaneswar, May 15: State-run oil companies have announced a ₹3 per litre hike in petrol and diesel prices, marking the first major revision in nearly four years. The increase comes amid rising global crude oil costs and geopolitical instability in West Asia, particularly disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz.

In Delhi, petrol now costs ₹97.77 per litre and diesel ₹90.67. Prices in other metros have also surged: Kolkata (₹108.74/₹95.13), Mumbai (₹106.68/₹93.14), and Chennai (₹103.67/₹95.25).

Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had earlier signaled possible revisions, citing global energy market pressures. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged citizens to conserve fuel and foreign exchange by adopting public transport, carpooling, remote work, and reducing non-essential travel.

Corporate houses and state governments have begun responding with austerity measures, including work-from-home policies. Analysts warn that the hike will likely push inflationary pressures across transport, logistics, and essential commodities, impacting households nationwide.
