Keonjhar, 25th May 2026: TP Northern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPNODL) has witnessed a significant rise in consumer participation under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in Keonjhar district, as hundreds of households continue to benefit from rooftop solar installations and reduced electricity expenses. During April 2026 alone, more than 700 consumers across the district received “zero unit electricity billing” after installing rooftop solar systems under the scheme. The initiative has emerged as a major relief for consumers, particularly during the peak summer season when electricity consumption generally increases substantially.

Following the directives of the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to observe May as “Solar Month”, TPNODL, a joint venture of Tata Power and the Government of Odisha, has further accelerated rooftop solar installations under the Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) model of the scheme. Under this initiative, residential consumers with a 1-kW electricity connection can install high-quality rooftop solar systems at an affordable cost of only ₹1,875. Easy Monthly Installment (EMI) facilities are also being provided for meter charges to make rooftop solar adoption more accessible and convenient for consumers.

As per available information, more than 3,400 consumers in Keonjhar district have already installed rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana. This includes 987 consumers from Keonjhar Division, 498 consumers from Joda Division and 1,920 consumers from Anandpur Division. A total of 704 consumers received zero unit electricity billing during April 2026, highlighting the growing impact of rooftop solar systems in substantially reducing household electricity expenses.

Sharing his experience, Vijay Kumar Sahu from the Harichandanpur, Keonjhar area stated that after installing a 1-kW rooftop solar system, his electricity bills have reduced to nearly zero over the past few months. He added that he now pays only a nominal fixed charge and that the scheme has provided significant financial relief to his family. Similarly, Sabita Palei from the Ghatagaon area stated that before installing a 3-kW rooftop solar system, her monthly electricity bills ranged between ₹1,500 and ₹1,600. However, after installing the solar system, her electricity expenses have reduced drastically, with bills dropping below ₹100 during several months. Several other consumers have also expressed satisfaction after witnessing substantial reductions in their monthly electricity bills through rooftop solar adoption.
