Meramandali, Sep 01, 2026: Tata Steel Meramandali (TSM) conducted a full-scale emergency safety mock drill at the Gate-1 Bus Parking area to assess and strengthen its preparedness to respond to potential emergencies.
The exercise simulated an aqueous ammonia leak from a tanker at the plant entry gate. The drill tested the response capabilities of Tata Steel teams and the coordination among various emergency response agencies in containing the simulated leak and managing the situation effectively.
Representatives from government and statutory authorities, emergency services and other agencies participated in and witnessed the exercise. The drill provided an opportunity to assess the speed, coordination and effectiveness of the emergency response mechanism, while also identifying areas for further improvement.
The exercise was witnessed by Biswajit Panigrahi, Assistant Director, Factories & Boilers, Dhenkanal Zone; Dinabandhu Mallik, Station Officer, AFO, Dhenkanal; and Mayank Tiwari, Chief, Blast Furnaces, Tata Steel Meramandali. Community representatives, Anita Nayak, Sarpanch, Kusupanga Panchayat and Runubala Dhir, Sarpanch, Nuahata Panchayat were also present during the drill.
Following the exercise, participating officials and agencies shared their observations and suggestions, which will help further strengthen emergency response protocols, communication, and coordination mechanisms.
Representatives from Rungta Sons Pvt. Ltd. (Ferro Alloys Division, Dhenkanal), MGM Minerals Ltd. (Steel Division-1, Dhenkanal), Rungta Mines Ltd., Dhenkanal Steel Plant, Rimjhim Ispat Limited, NAVA Limited, GMR Kamalanga Energy Limited, and Anugola Energy Limited also attended the event and witnessed the mock drill.
Regular safety mock drills are an integral part of Tata Steel’s safety management practices. These exercises help reinforce emergency response procedures, enhance preparedness and ensure effective coordination among employees, emergency teams, government authorities and other stakeholders.
