Bhubaneswar: In a major boost to western Odisha’s connectivity, the state government has sanctioned the upgradation of the Bhawanipatna–Khariar road into a four‑lane highway.
Public Works Department Minister Prithviraj Harichandan announced the Rs 640‑crore project, calling it a landmark step for regional development.
The 70‑km stretch will include five major bridges, 15 minor bridges, and restoration of the old Tel River bridge, with an additional Rs 91 crore earmarked for bridge construction.
Officials said the project will reduce travel time, cut fuel costs, and improve the transport of farm produce, forest goods, and vegetables to markets.
It is also expected to enhance ambulance and bus movement, reduce accidents, and strengthen disaster response during floods and cyclones.
Local businesses such as shops, petrol pumps, hotels, and warehouses are likely to benefit, while students, patients, and government staff will gain easier access to schools, hospitals, and offices.
The improved road is also expected to boost tourism in western Odisha.
The foundation stone will be laid soon, marking what many see as a game‑changer for Kalahandi and Nuapada districts.
